Japan’s annual spring cherry blossom festival peaked in Tokyo at its earliest ever in records going back over 1,200 years, likely because of climate change. The sakura festivals, also known as hanami in Japanese, are traditionally celebrated with picnics and viewing parties, although pandemic restrictions have altered celebrations in 2021 somewhat.
